Tired 6th Grader

I think August is feeling the effect of having to wake up at 7:00 each morning. He has his own alarm, which really has saved our relationship, and takes a shower every day. Poor kid has somehow received his father's ability to take super long showers and has to set an additional alarm in the bathroom so he knows when his 10 minutes are up.

This morning I couldn't help but notice that he was dragging a bit more than usual. Last night we picked Trey up from the airport and didn't get home until 10:00pm. I think the kids now understand why we keep their bedtime between 8 and 9.

Speaking of Trey, he spend the weekend in LA so he could see a few shows and came home so sick! He's got that body ache and headache and he just wants to sleep. We're keeping him away from everybody so that it doesn't make it's way through the family.

The kids and I all got our flu shots the other day...well, I got my flu shot and the kids cried and generally threw a fit until the nurse happily suggested that they get the nasal mist. August has always had a hard time with shots, but Hazel? She's been so brave every time...except this time.
But I'm hoping having had the immunizations, we'll be set for a healthy winter.

Day 2

So this is where the sink and toilet were just days ago. I totally don't know what I'm talking about, but they've cut out the area to make room for the new plumbing. We're going to have a double sink and one of those new-fangled double flush toilets...fancy!
This is where the tub and shower were. They took the tile work right off the wall and (I think) they're going to put a new wall up for the subway tile. Our tub should be coming today.
They found some mold in the corner where the toilet was so they had to cut away some of the wall to allow it to dry out. We just had to do this to the downstairs bathroom because the water heater had a slow leak and molded out lots of wall down there.
So, that was yesterday...they were sawing and hammering and making all kinds of crazy sounds while Hazel (who has strep) and I sat downstairs watching our Muppet Show DVDs. Good times.

Thursday

So to give Hazel a little credit, she did wake up at 1 in the morning saying that her head was hurting so I gave her some Tylenol and she went back to sleep. But I was still surprised by the phone call from the school nurse suggesting that I come and pick Hazel up at 10:30 this morning.
I told the school that I'd be there as quick as I could but that I was in Edmonds and it may take a while, then Tank and I regretfully left the amazing dog beach and raced home.
When I arrived, Hazel was sitting on that bed thing that every school nurse office has, she didn't even notice me when I came in the room. We loaded in the car and started driving to Whole Foods to get her some soup.
During the drive we had this conversation:

Me- "OK, Haze, when we get home you can eat your soup and then you're going to go to bed."
H- "WHAT?! That's not right! I'm not even tired! I never fall asleep when I'm sick! Can't I at LEAST lay down on the couch?"
Me- "Nope. You've got to go to bed so that your body can get better. Did you think it would be fun to come home sick?"
H- "YES!!! I thought I could lay on the couch and watch TV cause that ALWAYS makes me feel better!"
Me- "Sorry baby, that is not resting, that's watching TV. Today is a school day, no TV, you know that."
H- "BUT I'M SICK!"
Me- "I know...that's why you're going to go to bed after the soup."
H- "This is TOTALLY not fair!"

So, she's eaten her soup and had a glass of water and is currently in her room. I'm sure she's not in bed, but she's quiet and she's not in front of the TV...success!

****Hazel has been asleep for about an hour now! I ended up going into her room to lay down with her, she resisted and talked....a lot...but was snoring within a half hour. TRUE SUCCESS!!****

Not Much

I've been busy getting ready for the Hootenanny and haven't had much time to post anything. I've found myself checking up on everyone else out there in bloggerville and thought that maybe I should post a little something just in case any of you were trying to pass the time on line.

So...Hazel is sick again. She had her teacher call Trey this morning to have him come pick her up. I had my doubts that she was actually sick...until she started vomiting...then I believed her...and started cleaning the bathroom to get the stink out. While I wait for the next round of projectile puke I've been snapping some pictures:Tank has been really cute lately. He's farting A LOT and those farts have been clearing the room. I've got 4 candles going right now in an effort to combat the stank...ha, tank-stank!
He will sometimes even look at his back end after letting one fly as if to suggest that it couldn't possibly be from him.

That last picture is one of my favorite new things. I can't remember what online store I found it on but it's super cute. Hazel enjoys drinking "ice cold water" from it when she's sick.

Freakin' Sick...AGAIN!

So Hazel came home feeling fine yesterday. But. Then. It. Happened. Something changed in her body and she hit a fever and melted down. This melt down continued from about, oh, 4:30 pm to, well, let's say, 9 am today. I had to dress her and take her to school because they were doing class pictures today, then rush to the drug store to get that children's flu medicine. She's all drugged up now and had to change her clothes to "make her feel better":
Aunt Kathleen came over to have lunch and brought a Valentines present from Jonah...it made Hazels day. I believe the quote was, "Wow, everything is just making me feel better and better and better!"
Oh the magic of flu medicine!
***Just got back from the Doctor...it's strep...again...the last time she had it was in January***

My Girl

So Hazel is 6. She's in Kindergarten. She's had strep 6 times. This is her 2nd time with strep this school year.
I know that when I was a child it was pretty common to have your tonsils taken out if you kept on getting strep. They don't do that any more. Apparently it's important to keep them so that they'll catch the infections...all the while Hazel suffers along.

Sick

Man-oh-man! hazel came down with something super yucky last night. she threw everything up from 9pm till 5am. i was so proud of her because this marks the first sickness where she actually made it to the bathroom before she threw up, usually she's vomiting where ever her face points...bed, trey's back, my front...but this time she ran to the bathroom and almost made it in the toilet...it counts!
the weird thing is that she didn't have a fever through the whole night, just vomited until there was nothing but stomach acid left. once she reached the point of no returned she was VERY surprised by a rather nasty shart. she ran to the bathroom and yelled, "mama, can you come here? there's something in my underpants and...ummm...i think i'm puking out of my bottom...it feels like PEE!"
ahhh, the discoveries of a 5 year old...
